Bemidji State men's basketball: Huskies run past Beavers

The inability to score in the second half doomed the Bemidji State University women's basketball team Friday as St. Cloud State downed the Beavers 74-66 at the BSU gym.

The first half of the game saw the visitors uncork an up-tempo attack that was clearly to their liking. That pace led to a variety of easy buckets from all angles. To BSU's credit, the Beavers were equal to the task, and the result was a five-point game at the break with the Huskies on top 46-41.

"They are a good team and we just weren't playing very good defense" said BSU coach Mike Curfman.

That lack of defense was evidenced by SCSU shooting 50 percent from the floor during the opening 20 minutes.

Bemidji State began the second half in a zone which throttled back the Huskies shooting touch and allowed the Beavers to gradually whittl away at their deficit.

Back to back bombs from Morgan Lee finally put Bemidji State ahead 59-58 with 9:19 to play. Not only was momentum on their side, but the Beavers' defense was doing the trick. SCSU shot only 25 percent to this point in the half.

But then the well went dry for the home team and BSU would not score again for nearly five minutes.

Sam Baldwin finally hit with an old fashioned three-point play to give BSU life. Another Baldwin hoop brought the Beavers within 67-64 with just over two minutes to go. Then SCSU corralled an offensive rebound which allowed the Huskies to burn a full minute on one posession and BSU was forced to foul. And St. Cloud iced the victory by making its free throws.

"We just didn't score in the second half, and that was it," said Curfman. "I thought we did a lot of good things, but you have to score."

BSU was led by Baldwin's 21 points while Kate Warmack added 12, all in the first half. Jordi Gerking led four Huskies in double figures with 17.

The win lifts SCSU 4-6 in the NSIC and 7-7 overall while BSU falls to 3-7 and 5-10.

Bemidji State will entertain Concordia-St. Paul 4 pm. Saturday.
