Bemidji State to host area high school track teams at Little Amik
The Bemidji State University Rec Center will host the annual Little Amik track and field meet beginning at 1 p.m. today.
The event will feature 15 girls and 15 boys squads, including the Bemidji junior varsities and a few of the varsity field event athletes.
Area teams that are expected to participate include Bug O Nay Ge Shig, Cass Lake-Bena, Park Rapids, Northome-Kelliher-Blackduck and Bagley.
Also expected are Virginia, Hibbing, Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin, International Falls, Wadena-Deer Creek, New York Mills, Dilworth-Glyndon Felton, East Grand Forks and Roseau.
"This meet is a great opportunity for the smaller schools to have some competition early in the track and field season," said Craig Hougen, the Bemidji State University track coach who organizes the indoor meets at BSU.
"The teams may have been able to practice outdoors for quantity workouts but competing indoors will provide them with quality opportunities."
The public is invited to watch the meet. The girls high jump and shot will begin at 1 p.m. along with the boys pole vault and long jump. The initial track event, the 4x800 race, will also begin at 1 p.m.
