Bemidji State baseball team's winning streak comes to an end against Northern State
Bemidji State's six-game winning streak came to an end Saturday with 4-2 and 3-1 losses to Northern State in a NSIC doubleheader at BSU Baseball Field.
BSU (15-20 overall, 9-12 NSIC) and NSU split the weekend four-game series.
The Beavers started Game 1 with a pair of runs in the first inning. Logan Kalis tripled to score Colton Smith and Brian Murphy singled to score Smith. It would be the only runs of the game for the Beavers.
Zach Miller hit a home run in the second inning for Northern State and the Wolves tied the game with a single run in the fifth inning. NSU broke the tie in the top of the seventh inning with a pair of runs and the game ended when BSU was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning.
Ryan Sander took the loss for the Beavers and fell to 2-3 on the season. He pitched 6 1-3 innings, struck out three and gave up four earned runs on six hits.
BSU had six hits in the game and Nick Jelacie led the way with two hits.
Northern State scored first in Game 2 with a pair of runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning.
BSU cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning when Kalis scored Brian Murphy on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Miller added an insurance run for Northern State in the eighth inning with a solo home run.
Phil Bray took the loss for the Beavers and fell to 2-3 on the season. He pitched eight innings and struck out 13.
BSU had seven hits in the game. Colton Smith and Zach Braun each had two hits.
The Beavers close their eight-game homestand April Tuesday against the University of Mary. First pitch is slated for a 1:30 p.m. start. BSU?plays at Winona State next weekend in a four-game series.
