Bemidji State baseball team splits at Concordia

ST. PAUL -- The Bemidji State baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader at Concordia-St. Paul, winning the opener 7-3 but dropping the nightcap 10-4.

BSU won three of the four weekend games in the NSIC opening series against the Golden Eagles. Overall the Beavers improved to 10-8.

Trevor Purvis got the Beavers off on the right foot in Sunday's opener with a home run to right on the fourth pitch of the game. BSU added two more runs in the stanza and upped its lead to 5-1 with a pair in the third.

The Beavers iced the victory with two more in the seventh.

Logan Kalis improved to 2-2 with a route-going performance. He allowed the three runs (two earned) on four hits with six strikeouts and just one walk. Matt Ellinghuysen and Jaryd Marks each contributed two hits.

In Sunday's rematch BSU scored once in the first inning but Concordia-St. Paul scored three in the third and five in the fourth to open an 8-1 lead.

BSU starting pitcher Ryan Van Someren was knocked out in the fourth inning after allowing eight runs on 11 hits.

Bemidji State's offense was led by Marks who went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI.

BSU returns to action March 31 when it hosts Minnesota-Duluth in a doubleheader.

Softball team drops two

BEMIDJI - The Bemidji State University softball team fell in a doubleheader to No. 13 Minnesota State Sunday afternoon at the BSU softball Field.

An 11-run first inning powered the Mavericks to a 12-0 victory in the opener and Minnesota State capped the sweep with an 8-0 win in the nightcap.

The two losses dropped the Beavers to 6-13 overall and 0-4 in the NSIC while Minnesota State improved to 23-6 and 3-1.

The Beavers return to action today as they host Valley City in a nonconference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

Tennis team loses 9-0

SARTELL -- The Bemidji State University tennis team wrapped up its three-match weekend road trip Sunday, falling to Winona State 9-0.

On Saturday BSU (2-12 overall, 2-5 NSIC) dropped 9-0 decisions to St. Cloud and Minnesota State.

Bemidji State returns to action Sunday when it travels to Fargo to battle MSU Moorhead at 8 a.m.
