WAYNE, Neb. – The Bemidji State baseball team dropped both games of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader Wednesday against Wayne State, losing 5-0 in the early game and 8-4 in the nightcap.

In the opener, which went seven innings, the Beavers (11-11, 2-4 NSIC) could only manage three hits on Wayne State pitcher Michael Frericks, who picked up the win for the Wildcats in six innings of work.

Wayne (14-6, 6-0 NSIC) scored single runs in the second and third innings but put the game out of reach with a three-run sixth highlighted by a two-run home run from Brandon Lalk.

Lewis Baumann and Zach Braun each doubled for the Beavers in game one while Matt Ellinghuysen singled.

Sophomore right-hander Ross Stein took the loss for BSU, going all six innings and allowing seven hits.

In game two, Wayne scored three times in the first inning and tacked on another in the second to go up 4-0.

A Logan Kalis double in the third inning gave BSU its first run when Chad Hanson scored, but Wayne tacked on four more runs – three in the seventh and another in the eighth – before the Beavers were able to score again.

BSU scored three runs in the top of the ninth but couldn’t complete the rally.

Senior righty Ryan Van Someren got the start for BSU and went six innings. He allowed four earned runs on six hits.

In all Wayne had 12 hits on three BSU pitchers.

BSU, meanwhile, had 10 hits – including three from Kalis, two by Jaryd Marks and two by Ellinghuysen. The Beavers left 12 runners on base.

Curtis Bussard started and secured the victory for Wayne State in game two.

BSU will return to the field this weekend in Bismarck, N.D. They will take on Mary in a pair of doubleheaders April 6-7 at noon.

The games were originally scheduled to be in Bemidji but had to be moved to North Dakota to find a playable ballfield.
