Bemidji State baseball: Southwest smacks 10 home runs to sweep BSU
Southwest Minnesota State used the long ball to defeat the Bemidji State baseball team in Wednesday's doubleheader at BSU Baseball Field.
The Mustangs defeated the Beavers 14-8 in Game 1 and 12-4 in Game 2 behind 10 combined home runs. It continued a tough trend for BSU, which has given up 37 home runs at home this season.
Southwest hit five home runs in each game.
Bemidji State fell to 13-24 overall (4-16 NSIC) with the loss while Southwest improved to 15-11 overall (11-5 NSIC).
Up next for the Beavers is a Saturday-Sunday road series at Minnesota-Duluth with doubleheaders scheduled for both days.
Game 1 was competitive. The Beavers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning and led 7-6 after six innings. The Mustangs finished strong by scoring four runs in the top of the eighth inning and added three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the 30-hit slugfest.
Dan Bauer, Josh Silvernagel, Nick Jelacie, Colton Smith and Ryan Sander had two hits each for the Beavers.
Bauer and Jelacie each hit solo home runs in the game.
Jelacie had a team-high five RBIs in the loss and scored two runs.
Logan Kalis started for BSU at the mound but didn't record the decision. He pitched six innings, struck out two and gave up five earned runs. Bryan Jamieson took the loss for BSU and fell to 1-4 on the season.
Game 2 was a more one-sided affair.
The Mustangs scored in every inning but the seventh of the seven-inning game.
Bauer answered Andrew Kinney's solo home run in the top of the inning with one of his own in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 1-1.
Joe Chism, Josh Silvernagel and Kurt Peterson scored the rest of BSU's runs in fifth. Jeff Schaper's outfield double scored Silvernagel and Chism.
Ryan Anderson started the game for BSU and fell to 2-2 on the season.
