The Bemidji State women's hockey team earned its first victory of the season in stunning fashion Saturday night in Coleraine.
The Beavers defeated defending national champion and No. 4 Wisconsin 1-0 in Coleraine at Hodgins-Berardo Arena.
Bemidji State rode the stellar goaltending of Zuzana Tomcikova to the win. The Slovakian finished with 35 saves and made double-digit saves in each period to earn her first victory of the year.
Bemidji State was outshot 35-25 in the game.
Annie Bauerfeld scored Bemidji State's lone goal at 13:52 of the second period on assists form Kim Lieder and Sadie Lundquist.
She beat Wisconsin goalie Becca Ruegsegger on the goal.
The win was only Bemidji State's second victory in school history over the Badgers, with the last coming in 2001.
Wisconsin entered Saturday's game leading the all-time series 39-1-2.
Bemidji State (1-2-0 overall, 1-0-0 WCHA) returns for the home opener Sunday to wrap up the weekend series with the Badgers (1-2 overall, 1-2 WCHA).
Game time is set for 4:07 p.m. from John Glas Fieldhouse.
The Bemidji State women's hockey team will be holding a high school preseason camp with sessions on October 26, 27 and 29 at John Glas Fieldhouse.
The focus of the camp will be on skill development, competition, conditioning and small-area games.
The camp is open to any girls hockey player in grades 8-12.
The cost of the camp is $40 and half-price to the first four goalies that sign up by Oct. 12. Registration is open to 30 skaters.
The instructors are BSU head coach Steve Sertich, BSU assistants Heather Farrell and Shane Veenker, BSU goalie coach Derek Peterson and the Bemidji State women's hockey players.
The October 26 and 27 sessions run from 6-7:30 p.m. and the October 29 session runs from 5-6:30 p.m.
