TAMPA, Fla. -- The Bemidji State University volleyball team lost twice in day one of the Florida Southern Classic hosted by No. 14 Florida Southern University.
BSU lost to FSU 3-2. The game scores were 25-11, 25-20, 23-25 and 22-25. The loss ended BSU's three-match winning streak.
The Beavers lost in the second match of the day to St. Leo University (Fla.), 3-0. The game scores were 25-17, 25-19 and 25-23.
The losses dropped BSU's overall record this season to 3-3.
BSU pushed the Moccasins to five-sets in the first match, but fell just short in the fifth and deciding frame. The Beavers fought jet lag in the first two sets, but came alive in the third and fourth against the nationally-ranked opponent.
In the fifth, BSU couldn't find a rhythm and FSU grabbed the match.
BSU sophomore Courtney Bitter had a season-high 36 set assists. Freshman Bethany Thompson had a team-high 10 kills.
Brie Groskreutz led the team in digs with 14. BSU out-blocked FSU 11-8. Sophomore Kimberly Hacker had seven blocks.
The Beavers couldn't find a way past St. Leo in the second match of the day. Bitter posted her third double-double of the season with 21 assists and 11 digs to lead the team in both categories. Junior Nicole Olson led the squad in kills with 10. BSU again out-blocked its opponent, this time by a 5-4 margin. Thompson had two block assists.
The Beavers complete the classic tomorrow with matches against Nebraska-Omaha at 10 a.m. and Eckerd (Fla.) at 1 p.m.
