Bemidji St. soccer, volleyball teams win on the road

The Bemidji State Soccer team beat the Minnesota-Crookston for the second time this season Friday afternoon in Crookston.

Tiffany VanHaaften scored in the 46th minute and keeper Abby Kjonaas was not forced to make a save in the 1-0 victory.

The game was a much closer match up than the first time the two teams met earlier in the month that saw the Beavers winning 5-1.

This time the Golden Eagles showed up determined to avenge the loss.

"Crookston played extremely well," head coach Jim Stone said. "Every game is different; they showed up with a lot of passion which helped give them confidence going into the game. It was a battle and you have to give Crookston credit, they came to play and they were well organized."

The goal came when a 50/50 ball was picked up by Rachel Gustafson. She played it over to VanHaaften, who fired a rocket from 25 yards out to beat Crookston keeper Anna Ogaard.

The Beavers wrap up weekend play Sunday at Minnesota State University, Moorhead at 1 p.m.

The Bemidji State volleyball team defeated Winona State 3-1 Friday night in Winona.

"We came out and played defense," Bemidji State head coach Laurie Bitter said. "Both teams were scrappy, it was a back and fourth battle. The team showed a lot of composure and didn't give-up. We finished well."

The Beavers needed extra points in the second and third sets to get the win.

The set scores were 25-19, 17-25, 30-28 and 28-26.

Leading the BSU offense was Laura Carlson and Nicole Olson with 14 kills each. Laura Slinger had 12 kills.

Bemidji State improved to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC.

"We needed to win on the road," Bitter said. "It was huge for us."

The Beavers play Upper Iowa Saturday afternoon.
