Bemidji St. soccer routs Jamestown in home opener

The Bemidi State University soccer team defeated Jamestown College 5-0 in its home opener Friday night at the BSU Soccer field.

The Beavers (4-1-0) played for their third shutout of the year as the Jimmies (0-6-1) were only allowed two shots on goal in the contest.

"The thing that I thought we did a good job at was working for the full 90 minutes," BSU head soccer coach Jim Stone said. "So that's what I was most pleased with in this game; our work rate."

Bri Scanlan opened the scoring in the 12th minute of play when she put the ball in the back of the net off of a corner kick.

Sophomore midfielder Rachel Gustafson scored her first collegiate goal when she fired a rocket off the volley from 15 yards out.

Gustafson kept the shot low and was able to tuck it in the corner beating Jamestown keeper Angela Veches.

"Rachael deserved it with the way she played tonight," Stone said. "It wasn't just the goal, she had a great game and I thought she was the player of the game."

Junior forward Ashlee scored her second goal of the season in the 33rd minute of the first half to give the Beavers a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

Brianna Duff scored her sixth goal of the season on an assist from Bethany Fluto to start the second half.

Duff entered the game as the top point scorer in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with 13 points.

In the 48th minute, BSU defender Kathryn Bjorge scored her first collegiate goal.

Abby Kjonaas (2-1) was credited with the win, but was not required to make any saves in the first half.

Samantha Ross (2-0) played the second half and kept the clean sheet going for the Beavers stopping the two shots the Jimmies put on goal.

The Beavers return to action next Saturday at home against No. 6 Minnesota State, Mankato at 1 p.m.

The Beavers will then host Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday at 1 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.
