Bemidji St. notebook: Beavers soccer starts Friday
Bemidji Minnesota P.O. Box 455 56619

The Bemidji State women's soccer team kicks off its exhibition schedule today in St. Paul.

The Beavers will play St. Catherine University at 1 p.m and the University of St. Thomas at 5 p.m.

The Beavers will host their annual alumni game on Saturday at noon.

St. Catherine and St. Thomas both compete in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and are affiliated with the NCAA Division III.

Bemidji State University junior defensive lineman Rob Wills was recently named to the 2009 Preseason All-NSIC team.

A first-team selection, Wills was one of 25 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference players to be recognized.

Wills burst on to the scene as a sophomore to anchor the BSU defensive line.

The six-foot-three, 255-pound Wills started 10 of the Beavers' 11 contests at defensive end and finished the season seventh on the team with 52 tackles (17 solo)--tops for a BSU defensive lineman. In addition, he finished second on the team with 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 quarterback sacks, while batting down three passes.

Bemidji State University, the Alumni Association and the BSU Foundation will hold the Fourth Annual Community Appreciation Day on Aug. 27.

The event is Bemidji State University's way to thank the residents of Bemidji and the surrounding communities for support of the university.

The event, open to the public free of charge, will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will run until after dusk at the BSU Pavilion and lakeside areas on the BSU campus. Free shuttle bus service from the parking lots at Bangsberg Hall and the John Glas Fieldhouse will begin at 4 p.m. and run until 7 p.m.

Half-price general admission tickets will be available for Bemidji State's home football opener against Minot (N.D.) State University. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. at Chet Anderson Stadium.

The Community Appreciation Day will feature the "A Taste of BSU" food bonanza, featuring an array of Bemidji State-themed food items from local restaurants and organizations.

There will also be a meet the Beavers session with an opportunity to meet a variety of student-athletes from Bemidji State's varsity sports.

There will also be activities for children.

Community Appreciation Day will also feature a live entertainment stage, which will showcase a variety of local acts including Power Play, Octaveblue and the BSU Swing Dancers.

There will be a fireworks show at dusk following the football game.
