Bemidji splits with Grand Forks
GRAND FORKS - The Bemidji Legion Post 14 baseball split a doubleheader with the Grand Forks Royals Friday, taking game one 7-5 before being shut out by the Royals 7-0 in game two.
"Basically, we had a very good first game and a not so good second game," Bemidji head coach Mike Fogelson said. "They have a pretty good team, too, though, so I think we're pretty even."
In game one, Bemidji, which improves to 7-3 on the summer, banged out seven runs on 12 hits, highlighted by Connor McNallan's 3-for-3, three RBI game. He also hit two doubles in the game to lead Bemidji.
Post 14 scored a single run in the first inning before the Royals tallied three in the bottom of the third to take the lead.
But Bemidji fired back with single runs in the second and two more in the third to re-take the lead.
Bemidji also scored runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh to close out the game.
Cody Jenkins started the game on the mound and threw for 3 1/3 innings before Mitchell Hendricks came in to relive him and pick up the win. The two combined to strike out three Royals hitters and walked seven but still held them to seven hits.
Jenkins also added a home run and a double while Nick Hovila had two singles and Zach Solheim a double.
In the second game, Grand Forks pitcher Gage Salquist shut down Bemidji, holding Post 14 to two hits. Collin Leif and Ryan Hirt managed the only two hits for Bemidji, both singles.
Hendricks started and took the loss in game two, throwing five innings. The Royals didn't score until the fourth, when they knocked in four runs. They continued to score in the fifth and sixth, with one and two runs, respectively.
McNallan threw the sixth for Bemidji. Bemidji pitching gave up a total of nine hits in the game.
Bemidji returns to action next week, with three doubleheaders - all at home.
Post 14 takes on Brainerd Monday, plays East Grand Forks Tuesday and will take on Grand Forks again on Friday. All of the games will be played at the Bemidji State baseball diamond.
