Bemidji Speedway: Inspired by father, Messner's racing career off to strong start
Scotty Messner's racing career started with a bang: Two track championships at Bemidji and Emo, Ont., rookie of the year honors and best appearing car award winner three years running.
Messner, 22, collected all of those awards in less than four years of racing. Messner lives in Bemidji and works for Cooperative Development.
He drives the No. 18 Wissota Street Stock car at Bemidji Speedway. He will be back in action at 5 p.m. Sunday for this weekend's race card.
"My dad was my inspiration," Messner said. "Watching him race for many years made me want to race."
Jerry Messner, Scotty's father, also drove a No. 18 car at Bemidji Speedway and surrounding tracks, winning many track championships.
"My family has always been into racing, and my dad was an awesome racer," Scotty said. "My mother also raced in the powderpuff for years and did well."
As a little boy, Scotty drove a Kitty Kat snowmobile, then moved up to four wheelers and later go-karts, racing them on the blacktop at Brainerd Raceway. "I even remember a time when I got to go to the 'big' races with Dad. He was driving for Don Bowman back then and I remember cutting my hand and needing stiches after working on Dad's car at the Jamestown Speedway."
Messner says his goal in racing is to do as well as his father. "He built the chassis for my car and it took alot of hard work and it looks amazing," Scotty said.
This year Messner is racing at Bemidji Speedway, Emo, Greenbush, Grand Forks, Devils Lake, Brainerd, Warren and Buffalo River speedways.
Scotty Messner gives special thanks to his parents, Jerry and Jane, and sister, Sara, for their support.
His crew includes Devin Bunker, Don Bowman, his family and Chelsey Anderson. He gives special thanks to his sponsors Devon Bunker Excavating, Surplus North and Scott's Radiator.
Sunday's card at Bemidji Speedway features a Wissota Mod Four and Mini Stock special along with Pure Stocks, Wissota Midwest Modifieds, Streets and Super Stocks.
