Bemidji finished second at Saturday's Cloquet softball tournament, falling to Chaska 8-2 in the championship game.

The championship contest was scoreless until the fifth inning when Chaska scored six runs after two were out. Bemidji almost escaped unscathed as the Lumberjacks thought they had nailed a runner at the plate for what would have been the third out of the inning. The umpire, however, ruled the runner safe and the call opened the door to a 6-run frame.

The Lumberjacks struggled at the plate as they managed only three hits. In the fifth Janelle Williams tripled and Taylor McLean singled her home and in the seventh Jess Yost tripled and Janelle Williams plated her with a sacrifice fly.

Chaska fared better with its attack as it ripped 17 hits.

Bemidji advanced to the championship game by downing Ogilvie 8-2 and Chanhassen 4-1 in pool play.

The opener saw the Lumberjacks score in every inning while the defense allowed only single runs in the fifth and sixth frames.

McLean went the distance on the mound and yielded only four hits. She struck out five and walked three.

Bemidji scored in the first when Jineane Williams doubled, Yost walked and Janelle Williams singled in her sister.

In the second stanza McLean tripled and Summer Monsrud tapped an RBI bunt single.

BHS added two runs in the third as Janelle Williams walked, Yost reached on an error, a wild pitch plated Williams and an error on Emily Larson's grounder scored Yost.

Another two runs scored in the fourth when Janie Johnson reached on a fielder's choice, Janelle Williams singled her home and Yost tripled in Williams.

Larson's single, a wild pitch and Chelsea Johnson's sacrifice fly combined for a run in the fifth and the Jacks capped their scoring in the sixth when Janie Johnson was safe on an infield error and eventually scored courtesy of Larson's single.

Yost handled the pitching chores against Chanhassen and she dominated, allowing only three hits while striking out 10.

Bemidji opened the scoring in the top of the first when Larson doubled and Yost singled. Chanhassen tied the game in the second but Bemidji tallied the eventual winning run in the fourth when Jineane Williams doubled and scored courtesy of two wild pitches.

The Lumberjacks added a pair of insurance tallies in the seventh as Mikayla Dahlin reached on a fielder's choice, McLean singled and Monsrud plated both runners with a single.

"The kids battled, they played hard and I was happy with how we competed," said BHS coach Brad Takkunen. "After playing so poorly against Fargo North on Friday, we were able to give a much better effort, especially mentally, in this tournament."

Bemidji will return to action Thursday when it visits Grand Rapids. Friday finds the Jacks at Brainerd.
