Bemidji softball team beats Greenway in shootout
The Bemidji softball team scored 11 runs in its first at-bat and needed every one of them as the Lumberjacks hung on for a 14-11 home victory Tuesday over Coleraine-Greenway.
"Our goal is to be a little better each day and today I don't think we did that," said BHS coach Brad Takkunen whose team improved to 2-0.
The key hit in the decisive first inning was a 3-run triple by Anna Pence. The stanza also included RBI singles by Jineane Williams and Hanna Olson and run-producing ground balls by Janelle Williams, Olson and Laura Clark.
Bemidji plated three insurance tallies in the fourth with the aid of Mikayla Dahlin's two-out walk, a pair of errors and Kellie Morehouse's 2-run double.
Bemidji collected seven hits and took full advantage of its running game.
"There were at least six times when we beat the throw to the base when Coleraine tried to get a force out," Takkunen said. "Those plays kept innings alive, especially the first inning."
Taylor McLean went four innings on the BHS mound and earned her second victory in as many starts.
Bemidji will return to action Friday at St. Cloud Tech.
