Bemidji skated to another tie

ST. CLOUD – The Bemidji girls hockey team played its sixth game Saturday in St. Cloud against Sartell-Sauk Rapids and, for the fourth time this winter, the Lumberjacks left the ice with a tie. Karleigh Wolkerstorfer gave BHS a 2-1 lead 4:39 into the third period Saturday but Sartell-Sauk Rapids tied the game eight minutes later. Neither team scored the rest of the stanza nor in the overtime and the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Saturday’s outcome gave the Jacks an 0-2-4 record while Sartell-Sauk Rapids is now 3-1-1. “I guess a tie is better than a loss but I thought we played three solid periods and played well in the overtime,” said Bemidji coach Bob Brink. “We are so close to turning these ties into wins.” After a scoreless first period the Jacks struck first Saturday when Madelyn Tews camped in front of the Storming Sabres net and tipped home a shot from the point. Kelsey Isaacson and Rachael Holm assisted on the goal which came 1:21 into the period. Sartell-Sauk Rapids evened the score at 10:07 of the stanza but early in the third period Wolkerstorfer pulled the puck out of a scrum in front of the Storming Sabres crease and stuffed the puck past goalie Erin Deters. Megan Dondelinger and Erin Booth drew the assists. BHS seemed on its way to its initial win of the season but at the 12:36 mark of the third period Sartell-Sauk Rapids tallied the tying goal on the power play. Each team fired two shots on net in the overtime but Deters and Bemidji netminder Emily Frazer held firm. Bemidji will try to earn that elusive first victory Tuesday at Warroad. On Friday the Lumberjacks will return home to host Chaska.
