Bemidji Skate Park: Four more days to vote
Bemidji Minnesota P.O. Box 455 56619

The Bemidji Skate Park needs your help.

The project needs to finish in the top 10 of ideas voted on online through the Pepsi Refresh Project to qualify for a $25,000 grant.

The Skate Park ranked as high as No. 6 in voting a few weeks ago, but has since dropped to about No. 19.

Voters can vote once per day, so Bemidji Skate Park supporters are asking community members to take the time to vote daily through Sunday, when the contest will end.

"It would be great," said Nate Dorr, an adult volunteer working with the Bemidji Skate & Bike Association to raise funds for the Skate Park, about the prospect for $25,000.

The Bemidji Skate Park has already raised $315,000 but needs another $135,000 to complete it.

The $25,000 from Pepsi would really help, Dorr said.

The Bemidji Skate Park quickly soared to No. 6 in Pepsi voting following a Twitter post from professional skateboarder Tony Hawk.

Hawk's Feb. 1 tweet said, "testing the power of Twitter ... vote for Bemidji skatepark project to win 25k from Pepsi:"

"We wouldn't have been nearly as high without it," Dorr said of Hawk's tweet.

Hawk is connected to the Bemidji Skate Park, because his nonprofit - the Tony Hawk Foundation - donated $25,000 to the project in 2009. The Bemidji Skate Park was one of three nationally that received $25,000 from the Tony Hawk Foundation; other project received $10,000.

The skate park

The Bemidji Skate Park will be located in the renovated Bemidji City Park.

The 8,000-square-foot park will have bowls and transitions, as well as street plaza style terrain and will feature Minnesota's first 6-foot-deep bowl
