Bemidji senior Al Johnson receives Skip Nalan Scholarship
BEMIDJI — Bemidji senior Alex Johnson was recently named the recipient of this year’s Skip Nalan Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded annually to the senior letter winner wrestler with the highest grade point average from a pool of area schools which include Aitkin, Bemidji, Deer River, Grand Rapids, Hibbing, Nashwauk-Keewatin, Northland-Remer, and Virginia.
Johnson, described as “a leader in the wrestling room, in the classroom and in the community” by Lumberjacks coach Rance Bahr, held a GPA of 3.43.
“Alex is everything a coach would want in a wrestler, leader and community member,” Bahr wrote in his letter of recommendation. “As a wrestler, Alex works hard year round to better himself, his teammates, and the state of Minnesota in the sport of wrestling. He possesses a quiet and professional personality and leads by example,”
Johnson received a scholarship check of $500. The heavyweight passed the 100-win plateau in December, and took third in the Section 8AAA tournament on Feb. 23.
He finished his senior season with a record of 34-8.
