Among notable action taken at the Bemidji School Board meeting Monday:

Resignations

The board considered the noncertified staff resignations of custodian Karl Oestreich, food service worker Claudia Meissner, health paraprofessional Charlotte Mayer, secretary Priscilla "Sally" Steele and secretary Susan Ness.

ACTION: The board voted unanimously to approve.

Test security policy

The board considered the second reading of the school district testing plan and procedure.

ACTION: The board voted unanimously to adopt the policy.

Request for contract release

The board considered a request by physical education teacher Matt Wavrin to be released from his contract.

ACTION: The board voted unanimously to approve.

School lunch prices

The board considered increasing school lunch prices by 10 cents at the elementary, middle and high schools for the 2008-09 school year.

ACTION: The board voted unanimously to approve.

Summer capital projects

Chris Leinen, director of business services, updated the board on the capital projects planned for the summer throughout the school district.

ACTION: No action was taken.

Primary election law

Chris Leinen, director of business services, told the board of a new law that changes school board elections. He said school districts will no longer be subject to primary election laws -- therefore they no longer need to hold primary elections -- unless they determine they want to.

ACTION: The board agreed not to pass a resolution that would make the school district subject to primary election laws.

Candidacy filing period

The board considered establishing Aug. 26 to Sept. 9 as the period for filing affidavits of candidacy for the office of board member.

ACTION: The board voted unanimously to approve.

Title I update

Kathy Palm, director of curriculum and administrative services, said the school district's preliminary 2008-09 Title I funding has increased for the first time since 2002. She said the preliminary allocations show Bemidji's federal poverty rate increasing from 14.13 percent to 16.07 percent and this accounts for the increase in funding.

ACTION: No action was taken.

Request for licensed staff

The board considered a request to hire a full-time Title I teacher at Central Elementary School for the 2008-09 school year.

ACTION: The board voted unanimously to approve.

Data retreat

Kathy Palm, director of curriculum and administrative services, said a data retreat for the board and school district leadership team is being planned.

ACTION: No action was taken.

BHS scholarships

Superintendent Jim Hess said many Bemidji High School students received scholarships this year.

ACTION: No action was taken.

Student recognition

Superintendent Jim Hess recognized the accomplishments of many Bemidji High School students in various activities. He will send letters to the students on behalf of the board to recognize their accomplishments.

ACTION: No action was taken.

Grant application

The board considered a request to submit an application for a grant of up to $10,000 from Domino Sugar and C&H Sugar to support efforts to increase participation among low-income children in summer and after-school meal programs.

ACTION: The board voted unanimously to approve.

Request to accept grant

The board considered a request to accept a $146,700 Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant from the Minnesota Department of Education.

ACTION: The board voted unanimously to approve.

Horace May project bids

The board considered the low bid of $201,971 by Knife River Materials of Bemidji to expand and rebuild the bus area and add parking spaces at Horace May Elementary School.

ACTION: The board voted unanimously to approve.

Code of Conduct

The board considered the first reading of the revised Code of Conduct.

ACTION: The board voted unanimously to approve. A second reading and vote is set for June 16.
