Bemidji reaches winner's bracket final at state Ripken tournament

Bemidji's Northern Heat continued to dominate its opponents Saturday, reaching the winner's bracket final at the state Cal Ripken 12-year-old tournament.

The Heat won its third straight 8-0 over defending state champion Baxter

It will take on the East Twins of St. Paul at 11 a.m. today with that winner advancing to the title game Monday at 1.

Should a second game be needed it would follow immediately.

The St. Paul team advanced with a 13-1 win over Aitkin, its second in as many starts.

Late afternoon contests in the losers' bracket matched Aitkin with Litchfield and Baxter with Waite Park.

Bemidji led the Baxter game from the start, scoring three times in the second and fourth around a two-run third.

Lefty Tarron Baker set down the losers on five hits, working out of several jams along the way.

His mates backed him with an 11-hit attack. It included Baker's third two-run homer in as many games.

Jack Johnson tripled and Baker, Josh Cervenka, Nick Leitner and James Swiggum hit doubles.

All five Baxter hits were singles.

The East Twins scored four times in the second and sixth and five in the third to win going away.

The lone Aitkin run came in the last of the fifth.

The Twins had 16 hits with Jim Bothwell going 4-5 and Mike Nelson 3-3 with a home run. Three Twins hurlers limited Aitkin to four singles.

Losers bracket play

in the morning games saw Litchfield set down Barnesville 4-0 on one hit while scoring twice in the first and third. Jared Pederson had a two-run homer.

Waite Park scored in its first four turns at bat including five in the fourth to eliminate Moorhead. Nick Baggenstoss threw four shutout innings and hit two home runs, one a grand slam. Zach Hayne had a double and triple

In Friday's final game, Moorhead ousted Crookston 15-4 scoring in five of its six turns at bat.

Mike Duginski had a home run and two doubles.
