ROSEAU – Bemidji spotted Roseau a 4-1 lead after two periods and the Rams weathered a third-period Lumberjacks rally to nip BHS 4-3 Saturday here.
Matt Serratore scored 5:37 into the third stanza and again at 7:10 to bring Bemidji within 4-3. Roseau, however, was able to keep the Jacks off the scoreboard in the final 10 minutes to preserve the win.
Saturday’s loss dropped BHS to 5-9-1 while the rams improved to 9-4-1.
“We came out in the third period and played hard and I was impressed with that,” said Bemidji coach Wade Chiodo. “The start of the third period was a critical point in the game. We were down 4-1 and our backs were to the wall.
“But we battled back, got within 4-3, generated multiple scoring chances and almost found a way to knot it up at the end,” the coach continued.
Saturday’s game featured five power play goals, including three by Roseau. A sign of what was to come happened early when Bemidji’s Mike Sauer was whistled for a tripping penalty 29 seconds into the action and Tanner Okeson scored 30 seconds later to give Roseau a 1-0 advantage.
The Rams upped their cushion to 2-0 three minutes into the game but BHS answered four minutes later when Noah Burns tallied his fifth of the season while the Jacks held the man advantage.
The second period proved decisive as Roseau notched two unanswered goals, both while on the power play.
Alex Strand beat BHS goalie Gabe Heifort at 9:30 and three minutes later Alex Ziegler connected.
The 4-1 score continued into the final period but Serratore sparked Bemidji’s comeback bid when he capped an end-to-end rush with a backhand goal 5:37 into the stanza.
At the 7:10 mark Serratore sliced the deficit to 4-3 when his shot bounced off the goalie and into the net for a power play goal.
“In the first five minutes Roseau was up 2-0 and we could have given up,” Chiodo said. “But the way we kept battling showed a lot of character and heart. I believe this team is taking huge steps forward.”
Heifort finished with 49 saves while the Jacks sent 26 shots at Rams goalie Ryan Anderson.
BHS will take another road trip Tuesday when it visits Warroad.
