Bemidji qualifies for national tournament

The Bemidji Renegades 18-U fast-pitch softball team captured the gold bracket championship of last weekend's Star of the North tournament in St. Cloud. As a reward the team qualified for the national tournament which will be held later this summer in Overland, Kan.

Bemidji posted a 1-0-2 record in its pool and was seeded second in the championship bracket. The team claimed the title by stopping Sleepy Eye 5-1 and Minnesota Chaos 4-3.

In the pool-play opener Bemidji and Minnesota Chaos tied 6-6. Brianna Neumann went the distance on the Renegades mound and allowed eight hits while striking out three and walking three.

Jessa Lusby and Jineane Williams each had two hits.

The second round saw Bemidji and St. Peter tie 6-6. Jess Yost pitched for Bemidji and fanned five. St. Peter had six hits while the Renegades pounded 14. Among them were three by Hanna Olson, Courtney Black's two doubles and Yost's triple.

Bemidji completed pool play with a 7-4 win over Cambridge. Neumann and Yost each pitched while Olson paced the offense with three hits, including a triple.

In its gold bracket opener Bemidji defeated Sleepy Eye 5-1. Neumann started on the mound and allowed only one hit. Yost relieved in the fourth and held Sleepy Eye hitless.

Kellie Morehouse, Olson, Black and Yost ripped doubles.

In the 4-3 victory over Chaos in the title game Neumann and Yost combined to fan seven. Kinzie Slough and Yost each had a pair of hits.
