CROOKSTON - Crookston participated in a tournament over the weekend and that added experience proved helpful as the Pirates defeated the Bemidji High School tennis team 5-2 Tuesday in Crookston.

"You always want to win a match like this but we were competitive," said BHS coach Mark Fodness. "Of the seven matches, three went the full three sets and I think the difference was that Crookston was a little more match-ready than we were."

Bemidji's victories came at fourth singles and second doubles. Noah Holter won his singles match 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 while Austin Korczak and Zach Hewitt combined for a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory in doubles.

"We're disappointed that we didn't win but there is no reason to over-react this early in the season," Fodness said. "We saw things that we need to improve and now our job is to work on them and see if we can turn this score around when we meet Crookston again on May 14."
