
Bemidji plays host to Cal Ripken 11-year-old tournament
Perennial powers Baxter and Waite Park moved to the winners' bracket final in the Cal Ripken state 11-year-old tournament Friday.
Playing at the Mark Evenson complex, the pair won their first two games and will clash at 1:30 today to determine one finalist.
Losers bracket games at 11 pit the East Twins against Moorhead and Bemidji against Thief River Falls.
Baxter toppled Moorhead 6-0 in its opener, then stopped Bemidji 10-4 in the second round. Bemidji had opened with a 6-0 win over Crookston.
Waite Park closed out Roseau 11-0 in its first game and the East Twins 6-1 in its second.
The Twins had stopped Thief River Falls 7-2 in their first game.
The two 11 a.m. winners today clash at 1:30 as well; with that winner returning Sunday to take on the Baxter-Waite Park loser Sunday morning at 11 for the second spot in the title game.
Should a second final game be needed, it would follow the first.
Bemidji scored three times in the first and went on to dominate Crookston. Zach Schaubhut and Cade Ogden combined on a three hitter, fanning eight.
Jason Schoning led a seven-hit attack with a triple and double. Dominic Evenson had two doubles. Schoning and Ogden each drove home two runs.
Waite Park used a pair of five-run frames to oust Roseau in four innings.
The East Twins from Maplewood scored four in the fourth to widen a 2-0 lead and turn back Thief Ri0ver whose only runs came in their final at bat.
Baxter scored in four of its five at bats to set down Moorhead.
In the losers' bracket, Thief River ousted Roseau 8-4, breaking a 3-3 tie with four in the third.
Moorhead closed out Crookston 14-4 in four.
Bemidji came apart with walks and errors, staking Baxter to seven runs in the second to fall out of contention.
It outscored the winners 3-2 in the final four frames, But it was too little, too late.
Waite Park used a four-run fourth to beat the East Twins 6-0 and coast home.
