Karvakko adds landscape services
BEMIDJI -- Karvakko Engineering has expanded its services to include landscape design & planning.
Landscape design integrates topography, plant species, site drainage and irrigation to create an aesthetically pleasing and functional landscape layout. This new service by the Bemidji-based civil engineering firm will benefit projects ranging from city parks to residential yards.
Keith Kinnen has joined the Karvakko Engineering team as lead landscape designer. Kinnen has more than five years of landscaping and engineering project experience.

Karvakko Engineering is based in Bemidji, with a branch office in Michigan. The firm provides civil engineering services within the upper Midwest, specializing in aviation, municipal, energy, transportation engineering and landscape design.

The accolade, which honors hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveler reviews on TripAdvisor, and is extended to qualifying businesses worldwide. Approximately 10 percent of accommodations listed on TripAdvisor receive this award.
Hampton Inn & Suites Bemidji is one of 819 other Hampton properties to receive this award. To qualify for the Certificate of Excellence, businesses must maintain an overall rating of four or higher, out of a possible five, as reviewed by travelers on TripAdvisor. Additional criteria include the volume of reviews received within the last 12 months.
Food shelf receives $2K Neilson grant
BEMIDJI - Bemidji Community Food Shelf has received a donation of $2,000 from the George W. Neilson Foundation to support the 2012 Food Shelf Farm Project.
Since 2008, the Neilson Foundation has donated more than $29,000 to enable local farmers Cindy and Gary Vanyo to raise sweet corn, potatoes, squash and raspberries for food shelf distribution.
BSU Catering to host Chamber After Hours
BEMIDJI -- Bemidji State University Catering Services will host Chamber After Hours from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Indian Resource Center at BSU.
Chamber After Hours is intended as a way for people to unwind after work in a casual setting with fellow Chamber members and become better acquainted with their peers.

Dive Depot listed as a top scuba place
BEMIDJI - The Dive Depot was listed as one of the five best places to get scuba diving lessons in Minnesota in an article on WCCO's website written by Rich Rein. The other four locations were all Twin Cities-area businesses.
The business has positioned itself as the "premier dive business in northwestern Minnesota," Rein wrote. "From search and recovery to underwater photography, The Dive Depot's variety makes it an ideal option for any diver."
The Dive Depot, which has been in business in Bemidji for 10 years, processed its 1,000th certification last month, company spokesman Dan Carlson said.

FSA grants Ultima Bank PLP status
BEMIDJI - Ultima Bank Minnesota has been granted Preferred Lender Program status for USDA Farm Service Agency guaranteed farm loan programs, according to a news release from the FSA.
FSA guaranteed loans allow lenders to serve, or continue serving, farmers who cannot be served on a conventional basis. FSA's guarantee program reimburses a lender for up to 95 percent of a loan loss, should a farmer be unable to repay the loan.
To qualify for the PLP designation, a lender must have made at least 20 FSA guaranteed loans in the past five years and have a low historical loss rate. The lender must have a proven record of submitting sound loan proposals and a demonstrated ability to service guaranteed loans.
