MFB to honor family farms with longevity
BEMIDJI – The Minnesota Farm Bureau’s Sesquicentennial Farm program will honor Minnesota families who have owned their farms for at least 150 years. The program recognizes family farms according to the following qualifications:
-- The farm must be at least 150 years old this year with provided authentic land record.
-- The applicant’s family must have owned the farm for 150 years or more. “Family” is defined as parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, first cousins, and direct in-laws.
-- Continuous residence on farm is not required, but ownership must be continuous.
-- The farm should consist of 50 or more acres, and currently be involved in agricultural production.
Previously recognized families should not apply. Applications are available at fbmn.org, by calling 651-768-2100, or by writing to Sesquicentennial Farms, MFBF, P.O. Box 64370, St. Paul MN 55164.
Applications are due by April 1.
Fade Masters to donate to food shelf
BEMIDJI – Mike Flaherty, owner of Fade Masters, a local barber shop, is donating all proceeds on Fridays through Lent to the Bemidji Community Food Shelf.
Lent began Wednesday and runs through the last Saturday in March, which also happens to be Food Shelf Awareness Month.

Sanford receives CAP accreditation
BEMIDJI – Sanford Bemidji Clinic Laboratories have been awarded accreditation by the College of the American Pathologists, based on the results of a recent onsite inspection.
The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program is recognized as the ‘gold standard’ for laboratories around the world, according to a news release issued by Sanford. It is also recognized by various federal, state, private and other regulatory agencies. The accreditation was received for Sanford’s clinic laboratories in Bemidji, Blackduck, Cass Lake, and Walker.
Meeting CAP standards indicates the highest level of laboratory performance and it is often more stringent than the government’s own inspection program.
Sanford hires new physician assistant
BAGLEY – The Sanford Bagley Clearbrook Clinic announces the new hire of certified physician assistant Stacy Smith.
Smith will work at the Sanford Clinic in Clearbrook four days a week and the Sanford Bemidji Walk-In Clinic one day a week.
Smith specializes in family medicine and urgent care. She received her undergraduate degree from Bemidji State University and completed her graduate degree at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. As a certified physician assistant, she is able to provide medical care under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician.

MFBF celebrating food awareness
The Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation is celebrating February as Food Awareness Month in Minneota to bring awareness to all things food – from the farmers who grow and raise food, to food safety and availability.
“Farm Bureau’s Food Awareness Month is aimed at helping American consumers learn about the food they eat every day,” said Mike Rouillard, MFBF promotion and education committee chair. “Minnesota farmers and ranchers take pride in ensuring safe food choices for Minnesota families.”
To mark the occasion, county Farm Bureaus in the state have been hosting events and working with food shelves to increase awareness of local food and hunger.
