DETROIT LAKES - Bemidji’s girls soccer team overcame terrible weather conditions and Detroit Lakes Thursday night and improved to 9-6 with a 4-3 victory.

“A game like this comes down to physical and mental toughness,” said BHS coach Kelly Schoonover. “You have to deal with the weather but you also have to focus on your opponent.

“Because of the wind, the rain, the sleet, the snow and the cold it was a tough game to play. But we played a fantastic game,” the coach added.

Joie Spry scored two first-half goals to help the Lumberjacks battle Detroit Lakes to a 2-2 halftime draw. Maea Wall gave Bemidji a 3-2 lead 18 minutes into the second stanza and nine minutes later Rachel Holm tallied the eventual game-winner with help from Erin Booth.

The home team drew within 4-3 with eight minutes to play but Bemidji’s defense held the Lakers off the board the rest of the way.

BHS goalie Casey Palmer stopped 12 shots, including seven in the first half.

“This was a tight game,” Schoonover said. “I was impressed with how we played the entire night. We kept control of the ball and that is something we’ve been working on.

“We went through a period as a team where we played slow to the ball but we have bounced back. And it couldn’t have come at a better time because the section playoffs begin next week.”

Bemidji closes its regular season Saturday at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy. The section playdowns open Oct. 13 at the homes of the higher seeds.

Bemidji is likely to be one of those seeds.
