BEMIDJI – Amy Carey finished second in the all around and her effort helped the Bemidji gymnastics team score 131.05 Monday when the Lumberjacks hosted Perham at the Gym Bin.

The visitors won the dual meet with 140.50.

Perham is a traditional Section 8A power and the Yellowjackets displayed some of their advanced technique Monday.

“Perham has some phenomenal skills,” said BHS coach Don Papreck. “But we also were looking to add skills to our routines and tonight we were successful with some of those additions.”

Carey was among the Jacks who is constantly working to upgrade her routine and Monday she tied for second in the vault (8.75) and the floor (8.90). Carey also place fourth on the beam (8.75).

Sara Erickson finished fourth in the all around and scored best on the bars and floor where she placed sixth.

Alyshia Moe was fifth in the all around. Her highlight came in the vault where she took first place with a score of 8.85.

Because of the recent ice storm the Lumberjacks hadn’t competed since Jan. 5 and they may have been a little rusty.

“The kids practice like we are in a meet but it’s not the same,” Papreck said. “We’re also battling some injuries and having people missing took some points from us on Monday.”

Among those not able to compete was Haley Gregg who is sidelined with an ankle injury.

“Haley is our top performer on the bars and among our top gymnasts on the vault,” Papreck said.

The Jacks will be off until Jan. 31 when they travel to Park Rapids. The regular season will end Feb. 2 at home against Detroit Lakes.

“Our goal is to keep improving each meet and I believe we are doing that,” Papreck said.

The Lumbejacks hope to peak Feb. 16 when they head to Little Falls for the section meet.
