According to the criminal complaint:

On Monday, Sept. 14, Beltrami County Sheriff's deputies were contacted by the mother of a 12-year-old child about the possible sexual assault on her child by a 20-year-old she identified as Chilson.

Deputies met with the mother who informed them that she had just read the Aug. 19 diary entry, which disclosed that the child performed oral sex on Chilson when the two were alone in his residence in Bemidji. The mother expressed concern for her child's safety, and she requested that this incident be investigated.

On Sept. 15, sheriff's investigators and child protection investigators traveled to a school to interview the 12-year-old. Investigators were able to conduct the interview at school. The child informed the investigators that they were alone at Chilson's residence on the 4000 block of Birdsview Lane N.W. in Bemidji on or about Aug. 19.

Chilson confessed that on or about Aug. 19 a 12-year-old was present in his residence and they watched television. Chilson said the 12-year-old performed oral sex on him. He said he then drove the child home.
