Bemidji man charged with kidnapping, assaulting woman
BEMIDJI — A Bemidji man was charged Tuesday for assaulting the mother of his child and forcing her into the trunk of his car over the weekend.
Christopher Frank Michaud Sr., 23, was booked into jail at 3:11 a.m. Sunday. He remained in custody Tuesday on $30,000 bail, Beltrami County Attorney Tim Faver said.
Michaud was arraigned before Beltrami District Judge Paul Benshoof on Tuesday on one count of felony kidnapping and two counts of misdemeanor domestic assault.
Police were initially called at 5:30 p.m. Saturday by a victim of an assault in the 100 block of Gould Avenue Southeast. There, Michaud was accused by the victim of shutting her hand in the trunk of a car while she was reaching for a child’s stroller, according to the criminal complaint.
Police returned at 10:15 p.m. Sunday after the woman called to report another assault. They found her with a “sufficient amount of blood covering her face, sufficient swelling above her left eye” and that she “was covered with dirt.” The woman told police she’d been “run down” by a vehicle driven by Michaud, who then threw her into the trunk and drove to an unknown location, the complaint stated.
Michaud then dragged her out of the trunk, assaulted her and forced her into the car against her will, she told police. The woman eventually escaped from Michaud, who chased her down and repeatedly kicked and punched her. The woman escaped again and fled to a relative’s home where she called police, the complaint stated. Police said the woman’s injuries were consistent with her version of events.
After giving her statement, she was taken to Sanford Medical Center in Bemidji to be treated for her injuries.
