Bemidji Legion sweeps Roseau, improves record to 4-1
The Bemidji Legion baseball team took a 4-1 record into Wednesday's doubleheader at Little Falls after sweeping Roseau 10-3 and 11-4 Tuesday in Bemidji.
Miah Graves went the distance in Tuesday's opener and he had plenty of help from his offense.
Bemidji took control early with three runs in the first inning and settled the issue with two in the second, three more in the third and a pair in the fourth.
Consecutive singles by Collin Leif, Tyler Follis and Cody Rutledge fueled the first-inning rally. Pinch runner Kevin Murphy scored when he worked a double-steal with Follis who later scored courtesy of Rutledge's single. Rutledge added the third run of the frame when he scampered home on a wild pitch.
In the second inning Booster Russ and Mitch Hendricks singled, Follis delivered a sacrifice fly and Rutledge plated Hendricks with a single.
The 3-run third inning featured Mason Bellew's double, Matt Hietala and Russ being hit by pitches, walks to Dom Hayle and Follis plus an error.
The nightcap saw Bemidji run home seven runs in the fourth inning to overcome a 4-2 deficit.
Bemidji had taken a 1-0 lead in the first on a hit batter, ground out and Rutledge's single.
Roseau went ahead with a pair of runs in the third.
Bemidji tied it in the last of the frame on Leif's single, an error, sacrifice and wild pitch.
But the visitors moved ahead 4-2 in the fourth when two singles and a walk filled the bases after two outs. A walk forced in one and the second scored on Bemidji's lone error of the game.
Lefty Matt Baily carried the lead to the last of the frame when anything that might have gone wrong, did.
Matt Schneider reached on an error and Graves beat out his sacrifice bunt.
They advanced on a wild pitch and, after a strikeout, Leif bounced a chopper over the third baseman's head for two runs.
Follis, trying to pull away from a pitch, had the ball strike his bat and dribble down the first base line, eventually rolling fair as no one pursued it, allowing Follis to gain first.
Rutledge's infield single to short filled the bases and two more scored on Tatro's bouncer to third that was fumbled.
Another free pass finished Baily with Justin Anderson relieving. A wild pitch, Zach Solheim's single and two walks finished the wild frame.
Two more scored in the sixth on a walk, Solheim's triple and a sacrifice fly.
Murphy left after five. Catcher Leif relieved to retire all six batters he faced.
Leif, Hietala and Solheim all had two hits in the nine-hit Bemidji attack.
Murphy fanned four but waked five, throwing 94 pitches in his five innings of work.
