Bemidji Legion starts district tourney in St. Cloud
ST. CLOUD - After a solid performance in last week's sub-district tournament, the Bemidji Post 14 Legion baseball team hopes to keep that momentum going in this week's district tournament.
Bemidji, 19-7-1 at the end of the regular Legion season, opens District VI tournament play with two games at the St. Cloud Municipal Athletic Complex. The tournament is a double-elimination format, and two teams will be eliminated following today's games.
The Legion opens play at 11 a.m. at Joe Faber Field with a game against the St. Cloud 76ers, who made the tournament as the host team.
The winner of the 11 a.m. game will advance to the winner's bracket, where they'll take on either Elk River or Sauk Rapids at 5 p.m. The loser of the Bemidji/76ers game takes on the loser of the Elk Rapids/Sauk Rapids game, also at 5 p.m.
"Our strength in this tournament will be pitching," Legion head coach Mike Fogelson said. "We have a deep pitching staff, hopefully that can get the job done."
Ryan Hirt is scheduled to start the first game against the 76ers, while Zach Solheim will get the nod in game two.
Fogelson also said that his team would have to turn in a stellar defensive performance to win the tournament and go back to state.
"I think good defense will definitely be key," he said. "We're also going to have to grind out some at-bats and get guys on base. We've played most of these teams already so we just need to play well."
In the other two opening-round games today, Little Falls (who Bemidji beat to take the Sub-District title) will take on Big Lake, while St. Cloud Chutes will play Waite Park. Both games are scheduled for 2 p.m.
The teams return to the field Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the right to advance to the state tournament, which begins Aug. 2 in Chaska.
