Today's twinbill signals the start of a compact regular season which will feature at least 34 games, all of which will be played by July 11.

The sub-district tournament is set for July 14-15 and the district event will be held in Sartell on July 21-25.

"We practiced on Monday, handed out uniforms and on Tuesday we start the year," said Legion coach Mike Fogelson. "It's a short season in terms of length but a long season in terms of games."

The roster is heavy with high school players including Matt Hietala, Jeremiah Graves Tyler Follis, Cody Rutledge, Tyler Tatro, Collie Leif, Booster Russ, Mitch Hendricks, Matt Scnheider, Ryan Stevens, Mason Bellew and Zach Solheim.

Also suiting for the Legion will be Chris Berndt off Bemidji's B-team, Kevin Murphy who summers in Bemidji from his home in Remer and Dom Hayle and Cody Jenkins who will play part-time with the Legion but will be full-time with the VFW.

"Fortunately we have many pitchers on the roster because we have so many games in such a short time frame," Fogelson said.

The only two players not listed as possible pitchers are Hietala and Tatro. Everyone else is available and the coach expects to extend his pitching staff to include everyone.

"We use the summer season to compete and develop our players," Fogelson said. "We made progress this spring and, hopefully, we will make more progress this summer."

Bemidji is grouped in a sub-district bracket with Brainerd, Little Falls and Nisswa. Those four teams will stage their sub-district meet July 14-15 and the top two teams from that tournament will advance to the district tourney.

The Legion also will participate in a tournament in St. Cloud June 25-27 and will open with games against St. Louis Park, Willmar and Cold Spring.

The regular season will conclude July 9-11 with the Gopher Classic in North St. Paul.
