The Bemidji American Legion took one step forward and one step back Thursday, dividing a sub-district twin bill at Brainerd.

Bemidji took the opener 5-2 behind Ross Olson, then saw the host team score six times in the fifth to take the nightcap 6-3.

It left Brainerd at 7-2 against sub-district rivals and 9-2 overall.

Bemidji is 3-1 in the sub-district and 9-6 overall. The two teams will meet again at Bemidji July 13.

Olson, with late inning relief from JR Parker, was at his best in the opener, setting down Brainerd on a no hitter with both runs unearned.

Chris Smolke lasted only two innings for Brainerd with Jake Johnson going the final five. They allowed 10 hits while fanning one and walking one.

Bemidji scored twice in the second when Ryan Johnson singled with two outs and Jeff Schaper walked.

Singles by Andrew Hengel and Justin McKee each produced a run.

Brainerd tied the score in the third. Chris Sather walked with one out and Zach Heidmann with two gone.

Both scored as Nick Jelacie's topper was thrown into right field.

But the home team would not score again. Olson worked out of a mild jam in the fourth issuing two walks before leaving after the frame. Parker fanned five of the six batters he faced in two perfect frames.

Bemidji took the lead in the fourth when Dan Bauer, Johnson and Schaper singled in order.

It added a run in the sixth when Bauer reached on an error, took third as Johnson reached on another boot and scored on Schaper's sacrifice fly.

It became 5-2 in the seventh when Brian Murphy singled with two gone, took second on Sam Anderson's one bagger and scored on Bauer's double.

Bauer and Johnson had two hits each for Bemidji. The two Bemidji hurlers fanned 12 and walked five.

Bemidji seemed on its way to a sweep in the nightcap, taking a 2-0 lead into the last of the fifth.

It scored in the first when Joey Lindseth singled and pinch runner Johnson scored on a wild overthrow.

It became 2-0 in the second when Schaper singled, reached third on a balk, held as McKee walked and scored as McKee stole second and the throw went into center field.

But Matt Siegel shut the door in the next three frames and was rewarded when the Brainerd bats exploded in the fifth.

Anderson had spaced three hits to that point and worked around two errors.

But in the fifth, Rob Veith, Siegel, Brett Kramer and Heidmann singled in order to bring in one run and bring Hen gel to the mound.

He got one out but Smolke reached on an error as a second run crossed. Sather singled in a third and Jake Johnson walked to force home a fourth. The fifth scored on a sacrifice fly and the sixth on Veith's second hit of the inning when Johnson was nailed at the plate for the final out.

Siegel allowed one run in the sixth on Anderson's single and Bauer's double but set down the side in order in the seventh.

Anderson drew the loss, his second. The two Bemidji hurlers fanned two and walked one. Siegel had five strikeouts and one walk.

Schaper had two of Bemidji's five hits. Siegel had three and Kramer, Veith and Sather two for Brainerd.

The Legion hosted Perham last night, its last game before returning to the prestigious Gopher Classic July 7-11 where it faces five games in pool play and one or two more if it qualifies.
