ST. CLOUD - Bemidji Post 14 improved to 3-0 on the season Friday with a pair of wins at the St. Cloud Tournament.

Bemidji edged St. Cloud Chutes 2-1 in the first game and beat the St. Cloud 76ers 7-3 in extra innings in game two.

The round-robin tournament ends today and Post 14 will take on Rochester at noon.

Bemidji was missing five starters from the team Friday but that didn't stop them from winning.

"It was nice to see other guys step up a little," head coach Mike Fogelson said.

In the first game, Post 14 scored in the first and third innings but pitcher Mitch Hendricks shut down Chutes after giving up the lone run in the third. Chutes actually had the bases loaded with no outs in the inning but Hendricks escaped with only the one run.

He picked up the win and struck out three in seven innings of work. Brian Minks took the loss for Chutes.

Hendricks scored the first run of the game on Cody Jenkins' double to left center in the first inning.

Nick Hovila tripled in the third inning and then scored on Connor McNallan's grounder to short.

That did it for runs in the first game, but in the second, Bemidji curbed a late rally from the St. Cloud 76ers to eventually win in extra innings.

The teams were even the entire game, and each scored single runs in the first, third and seventh innings to go into extra innings deadlocked at 3-3.

But Post 14 broke the tie in the top of the eighth. Jenkins hit an RBI single and Mitch Buckanaga hit an RBI double to help Bemidji tally four runs in the inning.

Ryan Hirt pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win, including a spotless bottom of the eighth.

Jenkins started, going 6 2/3 innings with 11 strikeouts.

Hovila continued his excellent say at the plate in game two, tripling and scoring on a sacrifice fly in the first inning then singling and scoring on McNallan's RBI double in the third. McNallan also had an RBI single in the seventh.

Hovila finished the game with three hits while McNallan, Hirt and Sam Dwyer each had two hits apiece against St. Cloud starter Mitch Ergan. Ergan took the tough-luck loss despite striking out nine Bemidji hitters.
