BEMIDJI – Jessica Solberg set the tone with a 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles and the Bemidji girls tennis team cruised to a 6-1 home victory over Thief River Falls Thursday.

“It was a good overall day of tennis for the team,” said Lumberjacks coach Mark Fodness whose team improved to 5-0 in dual meets.

“I was happy with our approach to the matches.”

BHS won three of the four singles. In addition to Solberg’s victory, Amy Frosaker won 6-1, 6-1 at second singles and Claudia Bellew was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at third.

Bemidji’s lone loss was Sarah McNallan’s 6-4, 6-4 setback at fourth singles.

The Jacks swept the doubles matches. Olivia Dickinson and Annika Johnson posted a 6-3, 6-0 triumph at first doubles and the second doubles duo of Alexis Konecne and Megan Serratore cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Capping the day was the 6-3, 6-2 victory by Bemidji’s third doubles team of Claire Baumgartner and Jenna Lee.

“The girls stayed focused and continued to press even once they had commanding leads,” Fodness said of his team’s resolve. “We’re still working to improve and Thursday was a good example of how you can work to improve in every match you play.”

The Lumberjacks will have to continue that improvement Saturday when they try to defend last year’s championship at the Hibbing Invitational.
