Bemidji improves to 5-0 after sweeping Moorhead
MOORHEAD - The Bemidji High School softball team turned 20 hits and 17 walks into a doubleheader sweep at Moorhead Tuesday, outlasting the Spuds 11-9 in the opener and battering Moorhead 17-4 in the rematch.
Tuesday's wins upped Bemidji's record to 5-0 and the Lumberjacks will hope to continue that unbeaten streak Thursday when they host Grand Rapids.
"Even though we are putting up a ton of runs we're not playing crisp softball, especially defensively," said BHS coach Brad Takkunen. "We'll never complain about getting two wins at Moorhead but I do think we have to find a way to shut the other team down."
In Tuesday's opener the teams were knotted 7-7 heading into the sixth inning. The Jacks, however, gained control with a four-run frame.
Paige Conkle started the inning with a walk and, after stealing second, scored on Hanna Olson's single. Jineane Williams followed with a triple and, after Jess Yost walked, Janelle Williams tripled home both runners.
Bri Neumann pitched five innings and Jordyn Follis worked the final two to earn the victory.
Janelle Williams spearheaded the attack with a triple and three singles. Jineane Williams ripped a pair of triples.
The rematch was less suspenseful as Bemidji scored seven runs in the opening frame and Yost limited Moorhead to onlour total runs.
The first-inning spurt included singles by Courtney Black and Jineane Williams plus a series of walks.
Leading 11-2 after three innings, Bemidji put the game away in the fourth with six more runs. Highlighting that rally were triples by Olson and Jineane Williams.
An inning earlier Olson also belted an inside-the-park home run.
"Even though we're giving up too many runs, many things are going right for us," Takkunen said. "Our offense is playing very well right now."
