The Bemidji High School wrestlers closed their home campaign Thursday by hosting Badger-Greenbush/Middle River and the visitors won the final six matches to hand the Lumberjacks a 46-21 defeat.
Despite the loss, which dropped Bemidji's dual record to 9-6, BHS coach Rance Bahr was pleased with what he saw on the mat.
"Greenbush is one of the best teams in the state and we competed with them. We showed that we are a good team as well," the coach said. "The kids wrestled well and gave 100 percent. That is all I can ask."
The Gators took the first two matches by pin and technical fall but Bemidji answered with four consecutive victories.
Brian Maas began the run with a 10-9 decision at 119 and Ryle Masterson pinned his man at 125.
Logan Crosby's 6-4 decision at 130 gave the Jacks a 12-11 lead and Jake Crosby capped the spurt with a 9-5 triumph at 135.
BGMR drew even with a win at 140 but Colton Doty's pin at 145 provided a 21-15 BHS advantage.
Bemidji, however, would be blanked the rest of the way as the visitors completed their rally with three pins, a tech fall and two major decisions.
"Several of our kids were out of the lineup because of injuries and some kids had to wrestle up a weight or two," Bahr said.
"Nobody complained and everybody gave their best effort. And I'm proud of the kids," the coach added.
Bemidji returns to action Saturday at an invitational hosted by Fergus Falls.
