Bemidji HS wrestling: Jacks advance four to section semifinals
The Bemidji Lumberjacks advanced four wrestlers to the semi8finals of the Section 8-3A individual tournament Friday night.
Opening night drew close to 1,000 fans to the Fieldhouse to witness some excellent wrestling
All 10 teams qualified at least four for the penultimate round.
Team champion Apollo and runner-up Brainerd sent nine. Moorhead has six and Buffalo, St. Cloud Tech ,Rocori and Alexandria five.
Sauk Rapids, Bemidji and Willmar have four.
Action resumes today with the wrestlebacks at 11. They will be followed by the semifinals, ,third place matches and finals in rapid order with no breaks between rounds.,
Predicted starts are 1 and 3.
Logan Crosby, Craig Maas, Dale Norton and Corey Huber will be the Jacks semifinalists.
Crosby decisioned Ben Herbst of Moorhead in his only match at 112 and will face Mitch Bengtson of Apollo in his second.
Maas began with a 7-2 win over Joe Carpenter of Moorhead in the pigtail round then edged Mitch Mehwerth of Sauk Rapids 5-4 in overtime to gain the 125 semis
Norton needed only 51 seconds to deck Dillon Maher of Apollo in his only match and goes against Nick Grausam of Brainerd today at 135.
Huber used six takedowns and two near falls in a 20-5 technical fall over Nick Lawwell of Apollo.
He goes against Ryan Amundson of Tech at 160 this afternoon.
Otherwise, Tyler O'Beirne was pinned in his first start while Jake Crosby dropped a 4-1 decision at 119 .
Kade Johnson bowed 10-6 at 130 and faces Alex Austad of Rocori in his first wrestlebacks at 130.
Cody Thoring was pinned at 140 as was Kodi Craft at 145 .
LeRoy Pacheco lost a preliminary round test 9-7 to Levi Olivier of Rocori in overtime and gets Eugene Stepan of Willmar today at 152.
Brenden Fredrickson was pined in the preliminary round at 171 by David Then of Apollo and gets Zach Middendorf of Rocori today.
Tyler Molitor was a pin victim of Rocori's Ben Wittrock in the opening round at 189 while Brandon Larson fell in the quarterfinals at 215 to Chris Rocheleau of Apollo.
Heavyweight Alex Johnson was a fall victim at 3:54 to Sam Koetter of Apollo with whom he had divided two regular season matches. He gets Jerrad Nieland of Tech today.
All first and second place finishers advance to the state meet next week at the Xcel Energy Center.
