Bemidji HS wrestling: Huber, Norton stay alive at Red River meet
Bemidji's only two varsity wrestlers, Corey Huber and Dale Norton remained alive after the first day of action Tuesday at the giant Red River Wrestling Tournament at Fargo.
Huber, seeded ninth, earned a first round bye, then pinned Matt Becker of Faribault in 5:54 and Joe Seeley of Totino Grace at 1:27.
Today he goes against South Dakota state champion Chris Klopprodt in his first match in the quarterfinals.
Norton, also drew a bye after drawing a ninth seed. He dropped his first match at 135 to Will Sustercich of Foley 3-2 but rebounded to pin Cole C8hak of New Ulm at 5:32 and decision Conner Dahl of Delano 14-1 and Matt Tucholke of St. James 10-2.
He needs one more win today to gain the medal round.
In the JV division, five of the ten Bemidji wrestlers are still alive.
Logan Crosby at 112 and Kade Johnson at 119 went 2-0, Craig Maas at 130 and heavyweight Alex Johnson 3-9 and Brendon Fredrickson at 171 4-1. The first four are in the quarterfinals with Fredrickson needing one win today to medal.
Bowing out with 0-2 marks were Nick Ness at 95, Gary Molash at 119, Josh Dreyer at 140, Dustin Greenman at 145 and Tyler Molitor at 171.
The meet will wind up this afternoon.
