Bemidji HS wrestling: Huber, Norton place at meet
Bemidji's only two entrants in the varsity division of the 58-team, Red River wrestling tournament both placed Wednesday.
Corey Huber at 171 entered the day unbeaten but fell to South Dakota state champion Chris Klopprodt of Rapid City 8-1.
He came back to shade Zac Antolak of Anoka 3-2 before being pinned by Tyler Thomas of Owatonna at 0:43.
He then won his seventh place match by injury default when his scheduled opponent was unable to take the mat.
Dale Norton at 135. had lost his opening match Friday before winning three straight wrestlebacks to stay alive.
He continued that string Wednesday beating Conner Paulson of Eagan 4-3 and Tyler Carlson of KMS 4-2 before losing to T.J. Boeltel of Minneota 9-1.
He rebounded to defeat Tye Torgerson of Cambridge 4-2 in the seventh place match.
Rapid City took the team title with 186 points to 172 for West Fargo. Foley was third at 159½ with Owatonna fourth at 147½ and Minneota fifth.
In the JV division, three Bemidji wrestlers placed.
Kade Johnson at 119, who won twice Tuesday, added three more wins Wednesday to take the championship.Logan Crosby at 112 went 3-1 Wednesday and 5-1 in the tournament to end third.
Craig Maas at 130 split four matches Wednesday to end 5-2 and finish fourth.
Heavyweight Alex Johnson dropped his two Wednesday matches to close 3-2 while 171 pounder Brenden Fredrickson lost his only Wednesday start to close at 4-2., Neither placed.
Five others bowed out in the opening day, dropping both matches.
"I thought our whole crew wrestled very well both days," said Coach Rance Bahr. "It was a real learning experience for the entire squad."
Bemidji heads to Cambridge Jan. 8-9 facing the Bluejackets, Totino Grace and Zimmerman in a Friday quadrangular and wrestling in the Cambridge Invitational the following day.
