The Bemidji High volleyball team made history Saturday, sweeping four straight matches to capture its first championship at the Virginia Invitational.

The 16-team, small school event was not without its top teams with Bemidji forced to go an extra set to win three of its four starts.

Bemidji was able to return to Virginia this year when the Alexandria and Perham Invitationals were scheduled on the same weekend..

The weep lifted Bemidji to 17-2. fast approaching the school record 21 wins set the past two falls.

The team faces another major obstacle Thursday at Moorhead before playing the Alexandria meet Saturday. It went 3-2 at that event in 2008.

Bemidji opened at Virginia with a 25-20, 17-25, 15-13 win over Chisholm.

Kelsey Heisler led with 11 kills while Kayla Hirt had nine.

Brooke Homer had 22 assists and four aces. Heisler had five blocks and Hirt and Abby Hendricks three. Courtney Homer led with 21 digs while Erika Weimann had 10 and Hendricks nine.

Bemidji then stopped Cherry 25-13, 25-13.

Hirt had seven spikes with Brooke Homer leading with 19 assists. Courtney Homer had six digs and Weimann and Brooke Homer five. Hendricks had three aces and Heisler two blocks.

In the semifinals, Bemidji beat Esko 19-25, 25-18, 15-10.

Jess Yost led with 10 kills with Hirt adding nine and Allie Heifort six.

Brooke Homer had 27 assists while Heifort had the lone ace.

Courtney Homer had 16 digs, Hendricks 14 and Weimann 13.

Hirt led with four blocks.

In the title game, Bemidji turned back Hermantown 25-18, 21-25, 15-11.

Hirt had eight kills and Heisler and Heifort seven.Brooke Homer had 31 assists with Megan Wannebo getting two aces,. Hirt led with two block and Wannebo had 20 digs and Weimann 9.

Tuesday the volleyball team stages its annual fund raising spaghetti feed at the Evangelical Covenant Church west of Bemidji from 5-7 p.m.
