The Bemidji High volleyball team toppled the second northern Minnesota giant in as many matches Thursday, outlasting Grand Rapids 3-2 on the Thunderhawks court.
It lifted Bemidji to 13-2 on the year and dropped Grand Rapids to 11-2.
Bemidji was coming off a comeback 3-2 win over Hibbing here Tuesday.
It was a different story Thursday with Bemidji taking a 2-0 lead, then seeing the Hawks battle back to tie before falling in an extended final set 16-14.
Bemidji prevailed 25-21, 25-14, 17-25, 23-25, 16-14.
"It was an intense battle particularly in the final set," said Coach Teresa Colligan. "But the girls hung in there and pulled it out at the end."
Kayla Hirt led the attack with 16 kills while Kelsey Heisler added 14 and Courtney Homer nine.
Brooke Homer had 45 set assists.
She also had five aces while Abby Hendricks had two.
Hendricks led with 26 digs. Erika Weimann added 23 and Megan Wannebo 18.
Hendricks had nine blocks, Hirt eight and Heisler five.
The girls go back to the Range tomorrow for the Virginia Invitational, a small school field of 16 teams.
It will be a single elimination format this year with Bemidji opening against Chisholm. It is a tournament in which Bemidji should be a strong contender for the title.
The JV won 12-25, 25-14, 15-11 while the B Team won its only set 25-23.
Grand Rapids won the freshman contest 25-8, 25-10.
