Bemidji HS track: Gilbertson wins discus at Invite
The Bemidji track and field teams hosted Moorhead, Grand Rapids and Detroit Lakes on a perfect evening Tuesday and with a handful of events remaining the Spuds were leading Bemidji in the boys division 259-241 while BHS and Moorhead were tied at 232 in the girls competition.
Detroit Lakes had 178 in the girls meet and Grand Rapids 170. In the boys competition, Detroit Lakes was third at 178 and Grand Rapids fourth at 173.
The meet was still in progress when The Pioneer was sent to the press.
In the boys division Eric Calligan was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 37-3. Ryan Rud captured the triple jump at 41-9.5 and Kyle Heuwe was seventh in the event at 35-7.
Bemidji was second in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:39.88 but went 1-2 in the 4x800 relay with times of 8:15.65 and 8:30.03.
Sam Peterson was second in the 100 (11.42) and Andy Berube was fourth in the mile (5:10.79).
The Lumberjacks fared very well in the 800 as Alex Schoneberger set the pace in 1:58.65, John Buckanaga was second in 2:02.81, Matt Lee placed fourth in 2:03.51, Isak Sommer placed fifth in 2:03.69 and Jacob Urban was sixth in 2:04.95.
In the 200 Kevin Nelson finished third at 23.95 and Sam Peterson was sixth in 24.89.
In the girls division the Jacks were third in the 4x800 relay with a time of 10:25.04 and fourth in the 4x200 (1:54.13).
Steph Frey placed fifth in the 100 hurdles (18.37) and Kate Schulze was sixth (18.39).
Josie Spry contributed a seventh in the long jump (14-2.5) and Amanda Hunt added a fourth in the high jump (5-0).
Abby Hendricks placed third in the 300 hurdles (50.41) and Hunt was sixth in the event at 51.49. Maren Erpelding also placed eighth at 53.92.
In the 800 Bailey Drewes finished third (2:25.31) and Laura Edwards seventh (2:34.53).
Blake Bardwell contributed a third in the 200 (27.53) and Olivia Hruby was sixth in the event (29.25).
Drewes also placed second in the 1600 at 5:18.56 while Jenna Truedson was fourth at 5:37.48.
The Jacks took the top two places in the discus as Selina Gilbertson won with a distance of 106-0 and Katie Verchota was second at 95-4.
