Bemidji HS Thursday sports roundup: Jacks volleyball team rallies to beat Detroit Lakes
The Bemidji volleyball team needed five games to dispose of Detroit Lakes Thursday in its home opener.
BHS took the match 25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-8.
"We had the first home game jitters but we hung in there for the win," said Jacks coach Teresa Colligan whose team is 2-0.
The Lumberjacks took the first set 25-19 but it wasn't easy. The game featured four ties and as many lead changes.
Bemidji was able to open a 21-13 lead and eventually claim the win when the Lakers were long on a serve.
The visitors overcame a 13-9 deficit in the second game with a 6-0 run and never looked back.
In the third game the teams were tied 23-23 but Detroit Lakes took advantage of a pair of wayward Bemidji spikes to claim the two winning points and take a 2-1 edge in games.
The Bemidji girls soccer team fell to 2-2 on the season Thursday as the Lumberjacks lost 3-2 at home to Detroit Lakes.
Trailing 2-0 BHS finally found the scoreboard with 36:20 remaining in the game when Alexa Wang scored on a long kick from the right corner. Sierra Anderson drew an assist on the play.
Libby Jordan banged home her own rebound from just outside the net to give Detroit Lakes a 3-1 lead and BHS closed the scoring with 15:21 to play when Josie Spry drilled home a rebound of Wang's corner kick into the net.
Bemidji outshot Detroit Lakes 35-17 but the Lakers made better use of their opportunities.
Bemidji returns to action Tuesday when it hosts East Grand Forks at 5 p.m.
The boys squad extended its winning streak to two games Thursday when it blanked Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 8-0 in Walker.
Isak Sommer and Max Hazelton each scored twice while Luke Upgren, Nick Gorick, Tony Smith and Jonas Iverson scored once.
Bemidji's tennis dual at Coleraine Thursday was cancelled because of rain.
Only one set of three JV doubles matches were played and Bemidji won each.
