Bemidji HS softball team wins, will end regular season Saturday
The regular season for Bemidji's softball team ends Saturday with a doubleheader at Fargo Central and the Lumberjacks are continuing to make a bid for a high seed.
"Brainerd should be the top seed but we should be among the leaders," BHS coach Brad Takkunen said after his squad defeated Grand Rapids 8-2 Thursday in Grand Rapids.
If the Lumberjacks earn a top-four seed, which is likely, they will begin their tournament action Wednesday at home. Exactly who they will play and when the game will start remains to be decided.
Thursday at Grand Rapids the Jacks forged a 6-0 lead and coasted from there. Jess Yost earned the pitching victory as she limited the Thunderhawks to four hits. Yost also whiffed five and did not walk a batter.
Bemidji took a 1-0 lead in the second when Janelle Williams reached an a fielder's choice, stole second, gained third on a passed ball and scored courtesy of Emily Larson's double.
In the upper fourth Bemidji plated a pair of runs. The inning began with Jineane Williams' single and an error on Yost's fly ball to right put runners at second and third. Janelle Williams plated her sister with a sacrifice fly and Yost scored when she beat the throw to the plate on Larson's fielder's choice ground ball.
BHS settled matters with a 3-run sixth.
Yost set the table by drawing a walk but was eventually nailed at the plate after Janelle Williams hit a fielder's choice ground ball. Larson followed with a single and Chelsea Johnson contributed an RBI double. Laura Clark and Taylor McLean were hit with pitches, the latter driving in a run, and another scored when Erika Weimann's grounder was booted.
In the seventh Yost doubled and Janelle Williams singled. Yost later scored on a wild pitch and Williams courtesy of Larson's sacrifice fly.
