The Bemidji Lumberjacks boys soccer team made history Tuesday.

Unfortunately, it was not the type of history it would care to make

Playing in its 21st season, Bemidji had a game cancelled in progress by the weather.

It led Grand Rapids 1-0 at the 32 minute mark when a steady rain turned into a cloudburst

Bemidji has played games in heavy rain, high winds, cold and even snow.

But this time it ran into a factor it was unable to control...lightning.

The game began in light rain which turned heavy at the 10 minute mark.

It abated somewhat six minutes later, then returned at the 30 minute mark in a downpour.

And when lightning made its appearance, officials rightfully halted play, sending the teams to the dressing rooms to await its end.

Twenty minutes later, when lightning continued and the rain was coming down in a deluge, the game was cancelled and both teams sent home.

Bemidji held a 1-0 lead at the time. Max Hazelton had drilled home an open 35 yarder from the head of the box at 8:32 past goaltender Tyler Lane into the upper left corner.

Bemidji held an early advantage in shots in the early going but the Rapids had evened matters at 7-7 when the game ended. Kevin Larson had four stops in the Jacks net. Lane had only three.

Since the game is neither a conference or section game, it may not be replayed. It is the only game between the pair this year.

Bemidji takes a 3-0-1 mark to East Grand Forks Thursday to complete its week The next home game is with Detroit Lakes Sept. 15.

An early downpour with predictions of steady rain all day at Fergus Falls wiped out the Bemidji trip to the triangular with Moorhead the third team involved.

Coach Scott Engelstad hopes the meet can be rescheduled before the year ends.

It was the only action this week for Bemidji which will return to the courts next Tuesday for another triangular. This one will take place at Detroit Lakes with East Grand Forks the third team involved.

Bemidji is 1-0 in duals, besting Grand Rapids 6-1 last week. It won one major tournament and finished second in two others and has outscored its opponents 61-28 in individual matches.

The weather also proved too much for the girls soccer game at East Grand Forks.

That game will also be replayed later at a date yet to be determined.
