The team plays at Sauk Rapids Saturday at 4 in its next game.

The Bemidji High girls hockey team gave Warroad its closest battle in six weeks Thursday night, carrying the fight into the closing minutes before falling 4-0 at Warroad.

Maria Thompson turned in her best two periods of the year, holding the No. 1 State Class A Warriors to a 1-0 lead through two periods.

Megan Brettingen had the only goal in the 34 minutes at 12:44 of the second stanza.

Kayla Gardner widened the lead to 2-0 on a power play early in the third period which lasted into the final four minutes of play.

Bemidji came dangerously close to tying the score in the interim with an apparent goal disallowed by the officials though Coach Matt Menne said the puck clearly bounced off the back post and back out into play.

Moments later goalie Kelsey Amsley-Benzie smothered a Bemidji shot which dribbled back in front of the net.

Thinking the play had been blown dead, two Bemidji skaters went past the crease with an opportunity to bang home the rebound home but failed to do so.

The Warriors wrapped up the contest with a goal at 14:29 and another with 12 seconds remaining.

The rough, physical battle drew 17 penalties, nine on Bemidji. Six of the 17 were coincidental with Bemidji 0-5 on the power play and Warroad 1-6.

Thompson ended with 30 saves. Amsley-Benzie had 24.

No one had come within five goals of Warroad in its past 10 games since beating Roseau 2-1. It stopped the Rams again earlier this week 5-0.

The shutout was its eighth in a row.

Bemidji heads to Brainerd tomorrow for another tough b battle. The team fell to14-4-1.

Warroad has lost only once.
