The Bemidji High tennis team finished third Saturday at the Hibbing Invitational, ending a string of two straight titles at the event.


Virginia won with 31 points to 25 for Hibbing. Bemidji had 21 with Stillwater rounding out the top four. Eveleth, Duluth East, Grand Rapids-Coleraine and Pine City trailed.

Bemidji regained the services of Cortne Solberg after a siege of illness that had kept her off the courts for the past two starts.

She was limited to doubles, however, because of her lack of practice.

She and Taylor Kane teamed to win the No. 2 title, Bemidji's only win of the day.

Jamie Hoffman was upended by Sara Stejskal of Grand Rapids in the opening round but came back to claim the consolation title at No. 1 singles. Hoffman had beaten Stejskal in straight sets in their recent dual match.

Emma Nielsen took her opener at No. .2 singles but lost in the semifinals and dropped her third place match.

Haley Pollock lost to champion Caley Westin of Virginia in her first match but like Hoffman came back to claim consolation honors.

At No. 4 Mackenzie Schultz took her opener before bowing in the semifinals and third place match to end fourth.

In doubles, Jess Solberg and Kenzie Kane were first round winners before bowing to champion Virginia in the semifinals.

They fought back to take third over Stillwater.

The Solberg-Kane duo at No. 2 won two 6-2 sets in the quarterfinals, two 6-4 decisions in the semifinals and took the title with a pair of 6-0 decisions over Hibbing's Emily Mickelson and Laren Tromp.

Anna Lintelmann, Amy Frosaker and Katie Ditmanson alternated at No. 3 doubles and took third also, bowing to champion Virginia in the semifinals.

Bemidji is home Tuesday for a triangular with Detroit Lakes and Crookston, They face D at 3 and Crookston at 6 with those two teams meeting a 4:30.
