The Bemidji High tennis team, an impressive season opening performance under its belt, puts its title on the line at Crookston and Brainerd this weekend to complete the first section of its schedule.

Bemidji finished a close second to Mounds Park Academy at the Pine City meet last Monday, coming up two points shy of taking the title.

Today Bemidji defends its title at the Crookston Invitational, a meet it won by 18 points over East Grand Forks in 2008.

Monday it defends its crown at the Lake Hubert Invitational at Brainerd where it scored an eight point win over Delano last fall.

The two events will give coach Scott Engelstad two good looks at his upcoming squad which put five newcomers on the court at Pine City.

It came away with two titles, a second, two thirds and a fifth and sixth place finish to stay in contention all the way.

The luck of the draw which matched Bemidji against Mounds Park in three early matches, likely cost it the title.

Engelstad will have to rearrange his lineup today with two players missing, one due to a death in the family and the other to a prior commitment.

Both are doubles performers where the team's inexperience is most frequent.

Jamie Hoffman, Cortne Solberg and Kenzie and Taylor Kane are back at the singles posts where they will be favored to score well.

The shuffling will take place in doubles.

Emma Nielsen and Haley Pollock will go at No. 1, Jess Solberg and Mackenzie Schultz at No. 2 and Amy Frosaker and Claire Baumgartner at No. 3.

That alignment will change Monday with the return of Anna Lintelmann and Katie Ditmanson.

The Lake Hubert meet includes four doubles brackets.

Cortne Solberg and Kenzie Kane took the 3-4 singles titles at Crookston.

Bemidji also swept all three doubles crowns. But only Jess Solberg returns from the six who performed that day.

Bemidji won at Lake Hubert for the third straight season last fall with 31 points of a possible 35 to 23 for Delano.

That meet is a six team round robin with Virginia, Blaine, Brainerd and Champlin Park completing last year's field.

Bemidji swept all four singles crowns with Hoffman winning at No. 1 and Kane at No. 4.

Bemidji also won at No. 1 and 3 doubles with Cortne Solberg teaming with Megan Huseby at No. 1.

The Bemidji JV tennis team made its debut Thursday at its own Invitational doubles tournament, taking second place in a six-team field.

Teams entered six teams playing a round robin format.

The host team won outright titles at No. 1 and 3, tied for first at No. 2 and No. 4 and took third at No. 5.

Bemidji took the No. 2 crown on criteria, fewest match points allowed, after tying Coleraine and Roseau with four wins.

Winners were Katie Ditmanson and Anna Lintelmann at No. 1, Andrea Long Voelkner and Claire Baumgartner at No. 2 and Cassie Bucher and Lauren Lund at No. 3.
